A jungle trek in the lower Himalayas, Nagtibba ('Serpent's Peak'),is one of the most unique and historical treks that exist here. It is arguably one of those places from where the discovery of the greater Himalayas actually started. Offering the first spectacular and up close glimpses of the glacial Himalayan mountains including the Bandarpunch and Swargarohini range and even the Nanda Devi in the distance. The 'Nag Tibba Range' is amongst three principal ranges of the Lesser Himalayas, which includes the Dhauladhar, and the Pir Panjal, which branched off from the Great Himalayas. It is mentioned in the very famous book '7 years in Tibet' which chronicles the escape of Hienrich Harrier from the British into Tibet. There is a temple dedicated to Nag Devta and the range owes its name to this temple. Snakes have always held an important status in the Hindu religion. According to Hindu mythology, snakes are considered as the representation of rebirth, death and mortality, due to its casting of the skin and being symbolically "reborn". With only a day into the trek one reaches very remote region with almost no habitation. A great refresher and trailer for new trekkers who are yet to see the full movie of a long trek.
Day 1:- Dehradun to Pantwari (95kms Drive) & 6kms Trek to Kathiyan (4 hrs)
Day 2:- Kathiyan to Nag Tibba Summit & Return (8 kms)
Day 3:- Kathiyan to Pantwari (trek 6kms) & drive to Dehradun (95kms)
Day 1:DEHRADUN TO PANTWARI (95kms DRIVE) AND 6kms TREK to Kathiyan
We start early from Dehradun towards Mussoorie and Kamptee falls to avoid the traffic. Mussoorie is 22kms from Dehradun and Kamptee falls another 17kms further. The road continues downhill from here towards the Yamuna river bed and reaches the town of Nainbagh. One road continues towards Yamunotri while we take the narrower road which climbs uphill towards Pantwari village. This takes us behind the Mussoorie ridge and into shepherd territory. The trek passes through gentle ascent in hills of Nagtibba Range. After reaching Kathiyan by late afternoon we will setup camps. Explore the surrounding area, take pictures, and have loads of fun this night. True to the spirit of refreshment, the bash tonight would be something to look forward to.
Day 02: Kathiyan to Nag Tibba Summit & Return (8 kms)
Wake up to the sound of chirping birds in your ear. Enjoy the morning views of first light falling on the high mountain peaks all around. After Breakfast head for Nag Tibba Summit with packed lunch. From top of the summit enjoy the views of the snow clad mountain ranges of Garhwal and Himachal. You will get to see the famous Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Black peak and many more peaks from here. Have lunch on the summit. Spend some time & start return to Kathiyan via the Nag Tibba Base camp.
Day 03: Kathiyan to PANTWARI (trek) & drive to Dehradun
Morning we start early & trek down to Pantwari village. We head to Yamuna Bridge by road for our rafting session on the Yamuna. The cold and green waters of the Yamuna are scary initially but after a few splashes and dips it gets tolerable. There are very few falls and drops on this river but a lot of gorge sections are created by the Yamuna. Places where the gradient is high thrilling rapids are created. In fact most of the river is fast flowing and one can sit and enjoy the river run. Bid adieu to our rafting guides and depart for Dehradun.
Day temperatures are pleasant through out & the nights get cold.
